The history of Cornelius Desormeaux Sanders Sr and James Francis Hollings Shepherd

In the year 1869, Cornelius Desormeaux Sanders Sr and James Francis Hollings Shepherd embarked on a journey that would change the course of history. They established Saunders, Shepherd & Co Ltd, a company that would go on to become one of the most renowned and respected names in the world of silver smithing and jewelry making.

As fate would have it, this small event of registering a company would lead to great things. The two men were not only skilled in their craft but also possessed an inventive turn of mind. In 1889, they invented the Krementz, a patent one piece shirt stud and also the self closing bracelet. This was just the beginning of their journey to greatness.

In 1893, they registered their silver mark CS*FS and used it to create high-quality, heavy-grade silver items such as the charming Stirling silver mustard pot. By 1899, they had become recognized as goldsmiths, jewelers, silversmiths, gem ring and gold chain makers, particularly specializing in silver, jet, and onyx jewelry for the export market.

Their reputation continued to grow, and they eventually changed the company name to Saunders, Shepherd & Co Ltd in 1916. By then, they had established factories in London, Birmingham, and Glasgow and were known for their exceptional jewelry design.

However, the company faced difficult times during the depression of the 1930s and during World War II. Their London premises were badly damaged in 1941, and by 1945, the company was down to just 30 employees. But, Saunders, Shepherd & Co Ltd recovered and moved to 1 Bleeding Heart Yard, London in 1980.

In 1981, the future of the company seemed secure when they were commissioned to make an 18ct gold bracelet for Lady Diana Spencer, who wore it on her wedding day to Prince Charles. This event marked a new beginning for Saunders, Shepherd & Co Ltd. They went on to design high-quality jewelry and joined Eterna watches in 1996. They are also the exclusive distributors for Fope Jewelry of Vicenza, Italy and export to the USA. They have launched watch brands such as Bergerie and SandS, and are now based at their new factory in Albion Street, Birmingham, thriving and succeeding in their craft.
