The founder, Sampson Morden, was the co-inventor of the first patented mechanical pencil in 1822. From then until the company ceased trading in 1941 as a result of bomb damage during the blitz they produced many innovative and unusual pencils.

This fine example, incorporating the symbols for faith, hope and charity is typical of their high standard of craftsmanship intended for an extensive clientele including members of the British Royal family, aristocrats and politicians of the time.
