The history of Blackamoor art and jewellery is closely tied to the Renaissance and Baroque periods, when European artists and jewellers were influenced by the exoticism and cultural fascination with Africa and the Middle East. The term "Blackamoor" was used to describe depictions of black figures, often stylised in a manner that reflected European perceptions of African and Middle Eastern people.

During the 17th and 18th centuries, Blackamoor art was fashionable in European courts, where it was seen as a status symbol. Wealthy patrons commissioned sculptures, furniture, and jewellery featuring Blackamoor figures to display their sophistication and worldliness.

However, as global perspectives on race and colonialism have evolved, so has the perception of Blackamoor. What was once a symbol of opulence is now often viewed through a more critical lens, as it can reinforce dated stereotypes. Despite this, Blackamoor pieces remain significant in art history and are still collected for their craftsmanship and beauty.
