The 19th century saw the continued fascination in antiquity that had been such a notable force during the 18th century. The ‘Grand Tour’ which saw members of the aristocracy travel throughout Europe gradually increased during the 19th century to include members of the increasingly wealthy middle class who were willing and able to buy items as a memento of their trip. This inevitably created a market and an increase in craftsmen producing works to meet the demand.

Cameos were always a popular item and the craftsmanship was often of exceptional quality. The ancient Gods, along with Roman Emperors were a popular subject and this example, with an exceptionally fine banded agate of the God Hercules, has been embellished with an opulent double row of diamonds amply showing it was regarded as a work of the highest order.
