Victorian jewelry is a fascinating reflection of the 19th-century aesthetic and cultural values. The pieces from this era are steeped in symbolism and often reflect Queen Victoria’s life events. From mourning jewelry to grand, extravagant pieces, Victorian jewelry is as varied as it is beautiful.

The Early Victorian Era (1837–1860)

The first part of Queen Victoria's reign is often referred to as the Romantic Period. During this time, jewelry was elegant and inspired by nature, with motifs like flowers, leaves, and serpents being incredibly popular. Snake motifs symbolized eternal love, a personal favorite of Queen Victoria herself.

Popular Materials:

  • Gold was abundant and lavishly used.

  • Gemstones like emeralds, rubies, and sapphires adorned many pieces.

  • Cameos and Coral were often set into necklaces, brooches, and bracelets.

The Mid-Victorian Era (1860–1885)

Known as the Mourning Period due to the death of Prince Albert, this era saw darker tones and somber themes in jewelry design. Jet, onyx, and black enamel were common, and the pieces were generally more subdued. Mourning jewelry was created to commemorate lost loved ones, often including locks of hair from the deceased.

Key Features:

  • Jet and Onyx were extensively used in mourning jewelry.

  • Lockets were popular, holding a loved one’s photo or a lock of their hair.

  • Symbols of Grief such as weeping willows or urns were featured in many pieces.

The Late Victorian Era (1885–1901)

As the queen’s mourning period waned, jewelry became more opulent again. This Aesthetic Period favored whimsical designs, with a renewed interest in colored gemstones and bright, lively motifs.

Characteristics:

  • Diamonds became the center of attention.

  • Star and Crescent motifs were incredibly popular.

  • Brooches and Hairpins were widely worn, showcasing intricate designs.
