Town Heritage

Brentwood: From Royal Forest to Modern Town

Brentwood's history dates back to the 12th century when it was a clearing in the great Essex Forest. The name 'Brentwood' derives from 'Burnt Wood', referring to a clearing made by fire. The town grew as an important staging post on the main road between London and Colchester, with the original Roman road still influencing the town's layout today.

The town's development was significantly influenced by its position on the pilgrim route to Canterbury, and the Chapel of St Thomas Becket (now ruins) was built in 1221. During the Victorian era, Brentwood expanded rapidly with the arrival of the railway in 1840, transforming from a small market town into a popular residential area for London commuters.

💡 Did you know? Brentwood School, founded in 1557, is one of the oldest schools in England and has educated notable figures including Douglas Adams, author of "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy".
